Carpets

Old carpets make a good covering for compost heaps as they act as insulation.

An unwanted carpet can also make a good weed suppressant, especially within allotments or vegetable patches. Take care to brush off any soil that gathers on top of the carpet on a regular basis, otherwise weeds will grow on top.

Cartons

Cardboard milk and fruit juice cartons can be reused as plant pots. Cut off the top and use upright as containers for single plants. Alternatively, lay the cartons down. Remove the front pieces of the carton and use the remainder as seed trays. Always punch drainage holes in the base of the carton.

Cart wheels

Cart wheels have traditionally been used to create herb beds.

Chest freezers

Freezers have often been used on allotments as growing containers for plants such as melons that require warmth and space to sprawl. The freezer container is filled with a mix of compost, grass clippings and straw. There are safety considerations that must be borne in mind when reusing this type of container as there are inherent dangers. Lids must be removed so that there is no risk of anyone getting caught inside. Cooling systems and insulation contained within freezers pose another major issue. The Environment Agency classifies freezers as hazardous waste due to the fact that chlorofluorocarbon gases (CFCs), pentane and other chemicals can be found within the cooling systems and insulation. Although the majority of these chemicals are not directly harmful, the problem is that they react with the upper stratosphere and deplete the ozone layer, thus contributing to global warming. Removing these chemicals is a task that must be undertaken by licensed contractors.

Chicken wire

Keep pieces of old chicken wire. It is ideal for putting on top of newly planted pea, bean and sweetcorn seeds to prevent mice and birds from eating the seeds.

Chimney pots

Old chimney pots make extremely good containers, especially for invasive plants like mint or for trailing plants.
